Your AEO visibility score is useless without a to-do list
Visibility scores are commodity. Every AEO tool can tell you where you stand. The gap is the bridge from 'you're invisible' to 'here's what to publish.'
Every AEO tool on the market gives you a visibility score. A number from 0 to 100 that tells you how often your brand shows up in LLM responses. This is useful. It is also completely insufficient.
The score tells the VP of Marketing that "we have a problem" or "we're doing fine." It does not tell the SEO manager what to do about it. And the SEO manager is the one who has to actually ship the work.
The gap between measurement and action
Here's what a typical AEO dashboard tells you:
- Your brand was mentioned in 23% of relevant ChatGPT queries
- Your visibility score dropped 8 points this month
- Competitor X appears in 67% of category queries
Here's what it doesn't tell you:
- Which specific pages to create
- What content angles would close the gap
- Which competitor positions are vulnerable
- What you should hand to your content team this Monday
The first list is monitoring. The second is strategy. Every AEO tool we've evaluated stops at monitoring. The operator is left to figure out the strategy part on their own.
What "actionable" actually means
We use the word "actionable" carefully because it's been abused by marketing copy. Here's our definition: a recommendation is actionable if an SEO manager can read it, open a Google Doc, and start writing the content brief within 5 minutes.
"Improve your category visibility" is not actionable. "Create a comparison page targeting '[your brand] vs [competitor]' that addresses the three specific objections LLMs are surfacing about your pricing" is actionable.
The difference is specificity. Generic recommendations require the operator to do all the analytical work themselves. Specific recommendations front-load that analysis into the tool output.
How we generate recommendations
After parsing LLM responses for brand mentions, position, sentiment, and competitor references, we feed the complete audit data back into Claude with a specialized prompt. The prompt asks for 5 specific recommendations, each including:
- Priority level based on the size of the visibility gap
- The specific page type to create (comparison page, FAQ, technical guide, case study)
- Which queries from the audit this recommendation addresses
- Which competitors are appearing instead and what they're doing right
The output reads like a content brief, not a dashboard metric. Because that's what operators actually need: not a score to report, but a to-do list to execute.
The cost of monitoring without action
We've seen teams spend $300-500/mo on AEO monitoring tools and then do nothing with the data. Not because they're lazy, but because the data doesn't give them a clear next step. The dashboard looks great in the weekly standup, but nobody opens it on Tuesday morning to decide what to write.

An AEO tool should pay for itself by making the team more productive. If the output doesn't change what gets shipped, the tool is overhead, not infrastructure.
What to look for in an AEO tool
When evaluating AEO tools, ask one question: "After I run an audit, do I know what to do next?" If the answer is "I know my score but still need to figure out the strategy," the tool is incomplete.
The complete loop is: query LLMs, parse responses, compute visibility, and generate specific content recommendations. Most tools do the first three. The fourth step — the one that actually changes outcomes — is the hard part.
